Kismayo, 27 June 2024 – Acting UN Special Representative James Swan's visit to Jubaland marked a pivotal moment in strengthening collaboration for peace and development in Somalia. Meeting with President Ahmed Mohamed Islam ‘Madobe’ and his cabinet, Mr. Swan discussed critical local and national issues, including the transition phase of the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS) and recent health concerns.

"We are very pleased to see that Jubaland security forces, in close coordination with national forces, are preparing to assume responsibility for sites that ATMIS will be vacating," Mr. Swan said. This transition is vital for the security and well-being of Jubaland’s people and the effective response of United Nations agencies to local needs.

Mary Otieno, UNFPA's Country Representative ad interim, highlighted the essence of unity in their efforts. “We cannot achieve the huge mandates of the UN and of the government of Somalia without us working together,” she emphasized. Her message underscored the importance of collaboration in addressing security concerns and supporting newly liberated areas.

Mr. Swan also stressed the importance of continued engagement with the population on democratic processes and governance. “It's so important to continue to engage the population around the democratic agenda,” he noted, reinforcing the commitment to inclusive development.

Accompanied by representatives from UN entities such as UNICEF and FAO, the visit symbolized the strength of partnership. “The government is on board. They are working together,” Ms. Otieno added, capturing the collaborative spirit that guides their mission.

James Swan assured the people of Jubaland that the UN remains committed to supporting their needs. “We want to assure you that the United Nations system remains committed to working here in Jubaland across the full array of our mandates,” he stated.

This visit was a powerful reminder of the impact of unity and collaboration in achieving peace and development, highlighting the shared commitment to a better future for Jubaland and all of Somalia.
