In the third quarter of 2024, Somalia experienced a surge in displacements due to inter-clan conflicts over resources like water and grazing land, affecting regions such as Gedo, Mudug, and Galgaduud. Over 26,000 people, primarily women, children, and the elderly, were displaced, with many seeking refuge in Puntland and Galmudug. This displacement exacerbated gender-based violence (GBV) risks, especially for women and girls in IDP camps, due to inadequate shelter, security, and lighting. Assessments highlighted that open defecation, crowded camps, and lack of proper facilities increased exposure to GBV. Cultural stigma and fear of retaliation hindered survivors from seeking help, with many relying on traditional justice systems over formal channels. GBV partners, supported by the Somalia Humanitarian Fund, provided essential services such as psychosocial support, legal aid, and case management to over 50,000 beneficiaries in high-risk areas. Recommendations call for enhanced safety measures, including improved lighting, accessible reporting mechanisms, and stronger collaborations between humanitarian actors to address GBV risks and harmful traditional practices.
