In the town of Xudur, where conflict and hardship have taken a heavy toll, hope is being restored for survivors of gender-based violence (GBV), thanks to the unwavering support of the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA). In collaboration with the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) and AMARD, KOICA has funded a life-changing initiative providing essential care and empowerment to those affected by violence.

Mariam, a 27-year-old mother of four, is one of 20 survivors who have found a path to healing through this initiative. Her life was shattered when her village was raided, leaving her physically and emotionally scarred. Isolated and without hope, she struggled to find a way forward—until she encountered UNFPA’s comprehensive case management services, made possible through KOICA’s generous funding and support from AMARD.

With the support of a dedicated case manager, Mariam received urgent medical attention, including Clinical Management of Rape (CMR), a critical intervention ensuring her health and safety. She also engaged in psychosocial counseling sessions, where she found solace among other survivors who shared her pain and resilience.

"This support saved my life," Mariam shared, her voice steady with newfound strength. "I felt like I was drowning, but now I can breathe again."

Beyond immediate care, the project provided Mariam with vocational training, equipping her with skills to regain financial independence. She has since become a passionate advocate for other survivors, encouraging them to seek help and embrace the healing journey.

"I want other women to know they are not alone," she said. "Together, we can heal and rise."

KOICA’s funding has been instrumental in ensuring that survivors like Mariam receive not just emergency care, but also the long-term support necessary to rebuild their lives. UNFPA has worked closely with AMARD to deliver these essential services, reinforcing the importance of sustainable interventions in addressing GBV.

Mariam’s story is a testament to the power of comprehensive support, community solidarity, and, above all, the life-changing impact of strategic donor contributions. Thanks to KOICA’s leadership in funding and prioritizing GBV response, survivors in Xudur are reclaiming their futures, one step at a time.
