On August 12, 2024, UNFPA Somalia celebrated International Youth Day, reinforcing its commitment to empowering young people across the country. This year’s theme, “From Clicks to Progress: Youth Digital Pathways for Sustainable Development,” is particularly relevant as UNFPA continues to support youth with digital platforms in youth centers in Somalia.
The event in Mogadishu was highlighted by a speech from the Minister of Youth and Sports, Mohamed Bare, who emphasized the critical role of youth in Somalia’s progress. “International Youth Day serves as a reminder of the immense potential of Somalia’s youth in shaping a digital future and advancing the SDGs. Moving forward, continued support and investment in digital initiatives will be essential in realizing the full impact of youth contributions to Somalia’s development,” he said.
UNFPA Somalia Representative a.i., Dr. Mary Otieno, delivered a keynote address stressing the importance of investing in youth for sustainable development. “Empowering youth is at the heart of UNFPA’s mandate. We believe that by investing in young people, we invest in our collective future. We also believe that there cannot be sustainable development for any country without investment in its largest human resource—the youth,” Dr. Otieno stated. She also announced the inauguration of two new youth centers in Barawe, South West, and in Dhusamareb, Galmudug State, set for September 2024. “Through the youth centers, we aim to empower the youth to become leaders, innovators, and change-makers. This investment in youth infrastructure is a testament to our commitment to empowering young people and equipping them with the skills needed for a sustainable future.”
The youth centers supported by UNFPA across Somalia have become vital hubs for digital learning, entrepreneurship, and innovation. These centers provide young people with access to digital platforms, allowing them to engage in online learning, digital literacy training, and tech-driven projects. “These spaces will provide young people with the opportunity to learn and receive vocational skills training and digital literacy training,” Dr. Otieno added.
As Somalia continues to rebuild, the role of its youth is more critical than ever. UNFPA’s youth centers are not just places for skill acquisition—they are launching pads for the next generation of Somali leaders, innovators, and entrepreneurs. The commemoration of International Youth Day 2024 in Somalia serves as a powerful reminder of the potential of the nation’s youth. With continued support from UNFPA and its partners, these young people are poised to drive Somalia toward a peaceful and prosperous future.
