When a 45-year-old single mother, grappling with the devastating effects of drought and displacement, received a one-time cash assistance of USD 50.00, it was the start of a new journey. In the heart of the adversity faced by displaced communities in the Nasrudin internally displaced persons' (IDP) camp, situated in the Kismayo District of Jubbaland state, Somalia, this remarkable tale of transformation, shines a light on the collaborative efforts between SEDHURO, a nonprofit organization, and UNFPA Somalia, showcasing the profound impact of empowerment and resilience, thanks to the GBV emergency project (CERF).

With this modest yet empowering sum, Samda took a bold step forward by establishing a small grocery business within the IDP camp where she and her five children were staying. Her unwavering determination to provide a better life for her five children fueled her efforts, and she poured her heart and soul into growing her business against all odds. Through sheer dedication and astute entrepreneurial skills, this resilient mother's modest grocery table blossomed into a thriving shop within the camp. Today, it plays a pivotal role in providing essential goods and services to the displaced community. Not only does she meet her family's daily needs, but she also ensures her children receive an education, paving the way for a brighter future for the next generation. However, the impact of her success extends far beyond her own family. No longer reliant on external aid, she has emerged as an inspirational figure for others in the camp.

The funds provided not only offered immediate relief but also catalyzed a sustainable path towards self-sufficiency and empowerment. With the support of its donors, UNFPA, along with its implementing partners, is proud to continue to forge a future where displaced communities in Somalia, can rise above adversity, rewrite their narratives, and build prosperous lives for themselves and their children
