Somalia is experiencing a severe humanitarian crisis driven by prolonged conflict, recurrent droughts, and flooding, which have displaced approximately 3.8 million people, predominantly women and children. Displacement has heightened the risk of gender-based violence (GBV), particularly for women, girls, and marginalized groups, with rising cases of intimate partner and sexual violence exacerbated by limited access to services, stigma, and weak legal accountability. The GBV Area of Responsibility (AoR), co-led by UNFPA and IRC, coordinates specialized GBV services across Somalia, working with 54 partners despite challenges like funding constraints and security risks. To enhance response efforts, the AoR has developed an 18-month strategy aligned with the 2025 Humanitarian Needs and Response Plan, focusing on ten priority districts. Key strategic priorities include improving access to survivor-centered GBV services, strengthening coordination mechanisms, and integrating GBV risk mitigation across critical sectors.
