Mogadishu, December 21, 2023 – The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) successfully launched the Somali Youth (SoYo) Fellowship Programme today. The Fellowship programme aims to empower and shape the next generation of Somali leaders, showcasing UNFPA's commitment to the development and potential of Somali youth.

 

“In alignment with the United Nations Youth Strategy 2030, UNFPA's SoYo Fellowship Initiative will equip young people with the knowledge, capacity, and opportunities necessary for meaningful contributions to nation-building and personal development,” said UNFPA Somalia Representative, Mr. Niyi Ojuolape, while emphasizing UNFPA's commitment to harnessing the potential of young Somali people, in line with UNFPA’s mission in delivering a world where every young person’s potential is fulfilled. “The SoYo Fellowship is not only a capacity-building initiative but a commitment to shaping the next generation of Somali leaders, driving sustainable change, and fulfilling the aspirations of the youth.” He added.

Ms. Anita Kiki Gbeho, the Deputy Special Representative of the Secretary-General for the United Nations in Somalia, highlighted the pivotal role of the UNFPA as the primary agency dedicated to youth empowerment. She underscored the significance of the SoYo Fellowship, stating, "The SoYo Fellowship is not just an investment in the future of these young individuals; it's an opportunity for us all to contribute to the positive evolution of Somalia."

The UNICEF Country Representative, Waafa Saeed, also addressed the occasion, emphasizing the significance of this initiative, stating, "This initiative signifies meaningful youth engagement and empowerment within the UN system."

The pioneering initiative serves as a cornerstone for UNFPA's commitment to empowering young people in line with the United Nations Youth Strategy 2030. The programme resonates with and supports the priorities set forth by the government of Somalia in the area of youth development and empowerment.

 

The half-day ceremony witnessed the official unveiling of the inaugural SoYo Fellows, who were warmly welcomed into the UNFPA family. The event also included presentations on the Somali Youth Fellowship Initiative by Ms. Khadra Ali, induction of Fellows by Mr. Abdihakim Abdulahi, and a SoYo Fellow Speech by Dr. Fatuma Ali. The ceremony concluded with welcome packages, giveaways, and a group picture.

 

The 12-month initiative is aimed at providing a supportive environment for learning and skills training, preparing SoYo fellows for positive contributions to society through entrepreneurship, healthcare innovation, and social justice. The Fellows will have personalized and enhanced mentorship from accomplished experts, enabling them to unlock their full potential and make a positive impact in their communities. The rigorous curriculum offers relevant training and exposure to equip Fellows to design community-responsive solutions, meeting the needs of both individuals and the country.
