This September, tears of relief flowed from a 14 year old rape survivor as the judge read the verdict in Garowe high court. Jiite, the accused rapist, had just been sentenced to 20 years in prison. This land mark case reported to the police by the family of the survivor and community members saw the accused plead guilty to the charge.

Justice has prevailed thanks to the support of UNFPA and UNDP Somalia GBV working group led by the Ministry of Women development and Family affairs, Security, Attorney General's office and the civil society organizations.

'No one will escape justice for committing crime on sexual violence against women and girls in Puntland State of Somalia;' said the Director General of the Ministry of Security.

Honourable Minister Madam Anisa Hajimumin, during a press conference was commended for setting a good example to zero tolerance on rape for any Somali woman and girl. The community was also praised for the quick action they took. In attendance was UNFPA,UNDP, UNSOM, UNICEF, IOM, CSOs and various government representatives.

The girl is now undergoing counselling as she recovers from the ordeal.
