Every two hours, a Somali mother dies due to pregnancy a complication 3,900 Somali mothers die annually which is nearly more than double the conflict related deaths in Somalia. The maternal mortality rate is reported at more than 1000 per 100,000 live births which places the country among the top ten in the world where it is dangerous for a woman to give birth.

UNFPA, UNICEF, WHO and Development partners worked together with the Somali Authorities to design and implement the Somali Joint Health and Nutrition Programme (JHNP) 2012-2016. JHNP aims to support sustained and improved Reproductive Maternal Neonatal and Child Health and Nutrition outcomes for Somali women, girls, children and their communities. It also aims to improve the capacity and leadership of the Somali Health Authorities in managing and coordinating the health sectors development. Expected results include measurable reduction in maternal and child mortality.
