The arrival of a newborn is usually a time of joy for families and communities. However, when a baby is born prematurely or unwell, it can cause significant worry and sadness. These concerns can become an even greater burden if the newborn is at risk of disability and death. In Somalia, with one of the world's highest neonatal mortality rates at 42 neonatal deaths per 1,000 live births, sick and small newborns represent a significant public health challenge.
Procurement and distribution of 10 neonatal incubators, 10 radiant warmers and 10 monitors to strengthen the neonatal intensive care units in Somalia has a great input in managing very low birth weight newborn, premature babies, and other neonatal complications. Through the generous support of KSrelief, the survive and thrive initiative is making a significant impact in transforming the lives of small and sick newborns.
