The Late Minister Khadija Mohamed Diriye

In heartfelt remembrance of Minister Khadija Mohamed Diriye, we express our deepest sorrow at her passing. A beacon for women’s rights, her legacy is etched in her tireless dedication to advancing gender equality.

Minister Khadija’s tenure as the Minister of Women and Human Rights Development was marked by an unwavering dedication to the advancement of women’s rights. From founding the women’s caucus to advocating for a 30 per cent quota for women in Parliament, every endeavor reflected her steadfast commitment to the empowerment of Somali women.

Her instrumental support for Development of a National Strategy for the elimination of all forms of violence against women and girls and her pivotal role in advancing crucial legislations demonstrated her passion and profound advocacy for more equal and equitable Somali society. The passage of the FGM Bill, the Sexual Offences Bill, Child Rights Bill, and the Disability Bill, bear witness to her sincerity, commitment, and unyielding advocacy for justice and protection of vulnerable individuals.

Minister Khadija was a cherished ally, not just to UNFPA but to everyone working in the field of human rights, especially those most vulnerable and marginalized. We will remember her as a formidable force advancing women’s rights. Her absence leaves an irreplaceable void, and her voice and impact will be profoundly missed. On behalf of UNFPA Somalia and myself, I extend heartfelt condolences to her family, friends, the Government of Somalia, and all those touched by her extraordinary contributions to both work and life.
