UNFPA Somalia stepped in to assist more than 22,000 Somalis who had been held in detention centers in substandard conditions in Saudi Arabia. The Somalis were deported to Mogadishu from December 2013.

Majority of the affected deportees were vulnerable women, children and the youth who had been subjected to various life threatening diseases, ill-treatment and gender –based violence. Following IOM’s appeal for support to the deportees, UNFPA Somalia promptly responded with the provision of thousands of essential dignity kits which cover provisions for more than 10,000 deportees . The kits were handed over to IOM and these will be given on priority basis to visibly pregnant women, young and adolescent girls and vulnerable women.
