Every time I see them smiling and learning, I know I made the right choice. They are my greatest pride.” — Halima Yusuf
A Turning Point in Halima's Life
Halima Yusuf, a devoted mother living in Jowhar, has made it her mission to protect her daughters, Maandeeq and Nasra, from the harmful practice of Female Genital Mutilation (FGM). Her journey began in May 2023 when she joined a community behavioral change program funded by the Government of Japan, which utilized the SASA! Together model to confront FGM and Gender-Based Violence (GBV). As an educated nurse at the IMC Health Center, Halima understood the medical implications of FGM: “It’s not just a cultural practice; it can lead to devastating consequences.”
Participating in workshops where survivors shared their harrowing experiences deeply resonated with Halima. “Hearing other women’s stories made me realize I had to take a stand. I could not let my daughters face the same fate.” Education emerged as a powerful tool for change, enabling Halima to challenge harmful traditions with the knowledge she gained.
A Pledge for Her Daughters
Determined to safeguard her daughters, Halima pledged to protect them from FGM, which had been planned for July 2023. The thought of Maandeeq and Nasra experiencing the trauma she had witnessed spurred her into action. “They have the right to a life free from suffering,” she asserted.
Halima began hosting discussions in her home, inviting friends and family to explore the dangers of FGM and the importance of education. “The more we discuss, the more we can change,” she encouraged. Her enthusiasm inspired other mothers to join the conversation, highlighting the collective strength they could harness.
The Impact on Maandeeq and Nasra
Today, Maandeeq, now in grade 5, and Nasra, in grade 4, thrive in a nurturing environment, free from the fears that haunted their mother. Maandeeq dreams of becoming a doctor, inspired by her mother’s work: “I want to help other children and those who are vulnerable and sick.” Nasra, with a passion for storytelling, aspires to be a teacher: “I love my school; I want to learn everything!”
By choosing not to subject her daughters to FGM, Halima has ensured their health and future. The laughter of Maandeeq and Nasra fills their home, symbolizing the joy of a childhood unburdened by trauma. “Knowing that my daughters are safe and healthy is the greatest gift I could ever give them,” Halima reflects.
A Transformative Community Impact
Halima’s advocacy extends beyond her family. Her involvement in local health campaigns has made her a trusted voice on women’s rights and health. “Every time I speak out, I feel I’m giving a voice to those who cannot speak for themselves,” she says. Halima has become a role model, sharing her story to inspire others to protect their daughters from FGM.
Her efforts have sparked a community-wide reevaluation of traditional practices. More families are abandoning FGM, understanding that it is not a cultural requirement or a religious obligation. “Change begins with a single voice. Together, our voices can save thousands of girls every year,” Halima asserts.
Through her advocacy, Halima is reshaping her community’s future, fostering an environment where girls can thrive. “I want my daughters to have every opportunity to succeed, free from the pain I faced,” she emphasizes.
A Legacy of Change
Halima Yusuf’s story is a powerful testament to the impact of education, resilience, and community engagement. Her courageous decision to protect her daughters has created ripples of change, not just within her family but throughout her community. “We are not just changing our lives; we are shaping the future for generations to come,” she concludes, embodying the hope and strength of a mother on a mission.
