Bakool, Somalia - 24 years old Abshiro Ali Adan, overcame the hardships of living with obstetric fistula, a crippling and isolating condition, through a life-changing surgery facilitated by UNFPA and made possible by funding from KSrelief.

Abshiro faced five years of uncontrolled urine leakage, a common symptom of obstetric fistula, due to complications during her teenage pregnancy. The lack of antenatal care led to her isolation from the community, creating both physical and social hardships.

When Abshiro discovered the National Fistula Centre in Daynile Mogadishu, supported by UNFPA Somalia and KSRelief, she saw a ray of hope. Abshiro expressed, "It was like a ray of hope penetrating through the darkness that consumed my life."

Specialists at the center, with expertise and care, performed a successful surgery, liberating Abshiro from constant urine leaks. Through comprehensive treatment, including counseling and post-operative care, she not only healed physically but also rebuilt her spirit.

This marked a turning point, freeing her from the limitations and stigma of fistula. She was no longer confined to a life of social isolation.  Overwhelmed with gratitude, she now dedicates herself to empowering other fistula survivors, saying "I encourage women who experience fistula to seek treatment." She wishes that she knew about the reconstructive surgery earlier, and wants to save other women from the physical, psychological and social challenges caused by fistula.

Now, she actively participates in support groups, connects with communities, and raises awareness about fistula. Her goal is to inspire others to seek help without shame or fear.
