In Somalia, many women face significant challenges in accessing healthcare during pregnancy. However, there is hope. The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) operates a Mobile Maternity Clinic (MMC) that delivers essential healthcare to women in need. These clinics have saved lives and transformed countless stories, including that of Iqra Badal Nur.
On Thursday, January 9, 2025, at a facility managed by Human Development Concern (HDC) and funded by UNFPA in Daynile, Mogadishu, Iqra gave birth to her fifth child. Her baby’s first cries marked a joyous moment after what could have been a dangerous night. Thanks to the Mobile Maternity Clinic, Iqra was able to deliver her baby girl safely.
“I felt intense labor pain and didn’t know what to do. There are no ambulances or cars in our area. But my neighbor helped me get to this Mobile Maternity Clinic. I arrived at 1:00 AM, frightened and in pain. By 3:00 AM, both my baby and I were safe,” Iqra shared.
Midwife Farhiya Adan Ahmed and her team at HDC provided expert care, ensuring Iqra’s safe delivery. The Mobile Maternity Clinic, the first of its kind in Somalia, brings essential healthcare to pregnant women in hard-to-reach areas, especially in internally displaced persons (IDP) settlements. Iqra expressed her gratitude, saying, “I came here late at night, and they welcomed me with kindness. The services are free, and the staff is always ready to help.” This clinic is transforming lives by overcoming barriers to maternal healthcare in vulnerable communities.
Iqra also shared a heartfelt message for the donors who support the clinic:
“Thank you to the people of Japan who funded this clinic. You have changed our lives in ways you cannot imagine.”
This innovative approach to maternal healthcare is bridging the gap in service accessibility and providing a lifeline for vulnerable communities. Thanks to UNFPA’s support and the establishment of the Mobile Maternity Clinic in Somalia's IDP settlements, countless women like Iqra are receiving life-saving care. With continued investment in initiatives like the Mobile Maternity Clinic, UNFPA and its partners, along with the generous support from the people of Japan, are working towards a future where every woman in Somalia can give birth safely and receive the care she deserves. The funding from the people of Japan has been instrumental in making this life-saving service a reality for so many women in need.
