December 17, 2023, Mogadishu: The National Forum on Youth, Elections, and Democratization marked a significant milestone in fostering youth engagement and shaping Somalia's democratic future. Organized by The Folke Bernadotte Academy (FBA), the Swedish government agency for peace, security, and development, and the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), in collaboration with the Ministry of Youth and Sports (MOYS), the event convened diverse stakeholders to discuss youth political participation beyond national elections.
His Excellency, Swedish Ambassador to Somalia Joachim Waern, delivered the opening remarks, emphasizing the commitment of international organizations like UNFPA to empowering youth for a brighter future.
In his address, Honourable Minister of Youth, Mr. Mahamed Barre Mohamud, highlighted the crucial role of youth in Somalia's development. "We are committed to providing them (the youth) with all the necessary resources and opportunities, with the invaluable support of international organizations like UNFPA, instrumental in empowering and developing young people. Together, we can create a brighter and more promising future for our nation," he stated, expressing the government’s dedication to providing requisite resources and opportunities for the development of Somali youth.
UNFPA Country Representative Niyi Ojuolape reiterated the agency's commitment to youth development, recognizing their potential in shaping the future. The findings from youth forums across Somalia offer valuable insights into challenges and opportunities for political participation, contributing to the democratization process. Ojuolape commended the youth's role in leading the presentation of findings and recommendations, emphasizing their capacity as leaders of today.
The event highlighted a high-level panel discussion on youth political participation, featuring distinguished participants. Among them were the Minister of Youth and Sports, Honourable Mohamed Barre; Deputy Minister of Interior, Federal Affairs & Reconciliation, Honourable Adbihakin Ashkir; Deputy Minister of Women & Human Rights Development, Honourable Abidhakim Jimaale Aden; and Deputy Minister of Planning, Honourable Mohamed Abdulkadir Ali. Also present were the UN Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Somalia, Honourable Catriona Laing, and the Ambassador to the European Union, Honourable Karin Johansson. Their valuable insights added depth to the discussion.
During the discussion, the SRSG emphasized the paramount importance of youth involvement in decision-making and democratization processes. Ms. Laing further acknowledged UNFPA's commendable work in advancing youth inclusion, expressing optimism about collaborative efforts shaping a more democratic and sustainable future for Somalia.
The National Forum also witnessed the launch of the report titled "Youth, Elections, and Democratization – Beyond the National Election," summarizing challenges, opportunities, and recommendations identified in youth forums across Somalia. Somali youth played a central role in leading the program during the National Forum, presenting findings and sharing recommendations derived from this valuable process.
