As the world marks International Youth Day with the theme "From Clicks to Progress: Youth Digital Pathways for Sustainable Development," the story of Mustafa Mohamed, a 26-year-old disabled young man from Gabiley, Somaliland, stands out as a powerful example of how digital innovation can drive social change and economic empowerment.
In a community where unemployment and limited access to social services are pressing issues, Mustafa refused to be constrained by his circumstances. Harnessing the power of digital tools and platforms, he transformed his life and the lives of those around him. Mustafa’s journey began with a determination to overcome the barriers often associated with disability and to use technology as a means to carve out new opportunities.
With support from the Accelerated Socio-Economic Empowerment of Youth in Somaliland Project, funded by the European Union and the Government of the Netherlands, in partnership with UNFPA and Shaqodoon, Mustafa founded "Apple Decoration," a business that provides comprehensive decoration services. Through online platforms, he was able to promote his business, connect with clients, and manage operations, showcasing how digital pathways can enable youth to build sustainable enterprises, even in challenging environments.
Digital tools have not only been instrumental in Mustafa’s business growth but also in his educational journey. While running his business, he pursued higher education at New Generation University in Gabiley, leveraging online resources to support his studies and self-fund his academic journey. His success illustrates the transformative potential of digital technologies in providing access to education, entrepreneurship, and social empowerment for youth, particularly those facing disabilities.
I wanted to apply to this program so that I can get the funds to start a business to do something for myself and society," Mustafa shared. His story is a testament to how digital pathways can be harnessed to create sustainable development and empower young people to lead progress in their communities.
This International Youth Day, Mustafa’s achievements remind us of the critical importance of bridging the digital divide and ensuring that all youth, regardless of their background or circumstances, have access to the tools and resources they need to succeed. By investing in digital pathways for youth, UNFPA is playing a vital role in fostering innovation, resilience, and sustainable development across the globe.
As Mustafa continues to expand his business and make a positive impact in his community, his journey serves as an inspiration for young people everywhere. It highlights the potential for digital innovation to break down barriers and create new opportunities for all, driving progress towards a more inclusive and sustainable future.
