The Representative of UNFPA Somalia, Niyi Ojuolape, addressed youth and delegates at the 5th African Youth SDG Summit in Lusaka, Zambia, on August 16, 2023. In his speech, the Representative praised the ingenuity and resilience of Africa's young people, recognizing them as contributors to ideas, knowledge, and solutions that embody the essence of inclusive development.
Among the topics discussed in his speech, the Representative highlighted the strategic partnerships developed by UNFPA's Somalia office. These partnerships aim to provide young people with platforms for their voices to be heard. He mentioned an initiative called the "Dalbile dialogue platform," which gathers young individuals to share their perspectives, ideas, solutions, and innovations on issues relevant to them and their future.
Furthermore, the Representative discussed his and UNFPA's pioneering efforts in involving young people more closely with the United Nations through a structured and highly beneficial fellowship. “We are on the verge of inaugurating the Somali Youth (SoYo) fellowship in Somalia to provide young people with the requisite skills, capacity and experience to contribute to the UN and to thrive excellently after their internship.”
Concluding his address, the Representative encouraged young people to view the journey toward achieving the SDGs in Africa as a collective endeavor marked by determination and shared responsibility. He emphasized, “Let us harness the spirit of this summit to inspire action, break down barriers, and nurture a future where the aspirations of our continent's youth are realized."
